Examinations, Tests, and Repairs Make Offshore Containers Last - BSL Containers

When compared to other types of BSL containers, offshore containers are very durable and they last for a long time. However, periodic examinations, tests, and repairs may need to be made in order to ensure the long lives of these containers.

These examinations, tests, and repairs are done in an effort to maintain the validity of the certifications that are granted to these containers. It is actually the responsibility of the container's owner to appoint a representative to retain the certification of each container within their possession. This is done by arranging for inspections, record the repairs, and keep track of any modifications or any changes in the container's identification.

If by some chance a BSL container has not been used for a while, it will need to be inspected again before it is ever put back into service. The same goes for any offshore containers that are still in service but are past due for inspections.

As for how these examinations are scheduled, they should be periodically examined and they should be tested on a schedule. There are inspections that take place at 12 months, 48 months, and any time after a substantial repair or alteration has taken place. A visual inspection should be performed every 12 months, the pad eyes and the supporting structure should be tested every 48 months, and a lifting test should be performed if any significant alterations have taken place.

The tests are very detailed. For instance, a lifting test will test the pad eyes, but will also test the lifting equipment as well. Non-destructive examinations (NDE) will be performed on the lifting equipment as well as a visual inspection.

It is very important to do these examinations to keep the BSL offshore containers in working order and to ensure safety of the cargo and those working around the cargo. Examinations also preserve the investment by making sure you do not have to prematurely replace your offshore containers. These maintenance measures are required anyway in order to be able to keep them in service, so it is almost impossible for offshore containers to be in operation without the proper inspection.
